For the fifth time, Statista has analysed the start-up activity of the German start-up scene with startupdetector. According to the Bundesverband Deutsche Startups (German Startup Association), the suspension of the insolvency reporting requirement means that it is still unclear how many startups will not survive the crisis. The share of women among start-ups continues to stagnate at a low level of 16 percent.
In the first quarter of the year, the number of start-ups and financing rounds rose again compared to the same period last year. After many start-up plans were not carried out at the beginning of the Corona pandemic due to the unsettled environment, a lot of movement quickly returned to the industry. A total of 765 new start-ups were founded. This was about 40 companies more than in the same period of the previous year. Almost half focused on business models with a B2B orientation.
About 40 percent of the innovative companies were founded in the software, medical and eCommerce sectors. With 139 newly founded start-ups, the software industry remains number one. With 178 new start-ups, Berlin remains the undisputed number one. With 137 new start-ups, Bavaria overtakes the previous number two, North Rhine-Westphalia (132). In Munich alone, 84 young, innovative companies were founded, Hamburg is in third place among the cities (46). The share of women among start-ups continues to stagnate at a low level of 16 percent. At almost 60 percent, the majority of the managing directors were over 30 years old.
The number of startups with financing rounds also continues to increase: almost 100 more startups than in the same period last year and 20 more than in the previous quarter went through financing rounds in the first quarter of 2021. Startups went through their first financing round at an average age of 1.4 years. Compared to the previous quarter, some angels and corporates made significantly fewer investments, but the fourth quarter of last year was a kind of corona rebound record quarter for all three investor groups. The number of investments by venture capitalists, on the other hand, increased significantly.
According to the German Startups Association, the suspension of the insolvency reporting requirement means that it is still unclear how many startups will not survive the crisis. However, the dynamic development has also created good approaches to startups.
