In the first half of 2024, Hamburg reached a new high in the number of business start-ups, the Statistics Office North recently announced. With 2,912 new start-ups, the Hanseatic city recorded an increase of a good two per cent compared to the previous year, confirming its attractiveness as a location for start-ups.
From January to June 2024, a total of 2,912 new businesses were founded in Hamburg. This is the highest half-year figure since statistical surveys began in 2008 and represents an increase of a good two per cent compared to the first half of 2023. Despite a simultaneous increase in business closures by 15 per cent to 1,467, the balance remains positive: a total of 1,445 more businesses were founded than closed.
There were 1.5 business start-ups per 1,000 inhabitants in Hamburg. This ranged from 0.8 in the districts of Harburg, Wandsbek and Bergedorf to 3.6 in Hamburg-Mitte. In the district of Hamburg-Nord, the number of business start-ups even rose by 72 per cent within one year.

The establishment of a business (in contrast to e.g. small businesses) is assumed if the legal form or number of employees indicates greater economic significance. This is the case if the business is registered by a legal entity or a company without legal personality (partnership). Businesses founded by natural persons can also be included here, provided that the person is entered in the commercial register, employs staff or has a craft licence at the time of founding.
