The start-up “Beyond Emotion”, founded at the Hamburg University of Applied Sciences (HAW Hamburg), wants to set a new standard with AI-based emotion recognition software. The aim is to relieve the burden on relatives and increase the digital participation of senior citizens. The developed product BEJOY can be pre-ordered at a pre-sale price of 449 euros.
Demographic change poses new challenges for our society, especially in the area of care and support. Beyond Emotion, a leader in the field of emotion recognition, is addressing this by enabling mood recognition integrated into a digital picture frame that informs relatives of negative moods and sends a direct message in case of prolonged inactivity. Senior citizens place the BEJOY smart picture frame in their living room and the whole family can share photos displayed on the digital picture frame via a mobile app. In this way, BEJOY promotes digital participation and networking across generations and provides security.

The start-up stands for quality and reliability in the field of emotion recognition. Through continuous research and development, Beyond Emotion wants to actively shape demographic change and contribute to improving the quality of life of people worldwide.
The founding team, Dr Arne Bernin, Hanne Butting and Sobin Ghose, brings 18 years of research experience in the field of emotion recognition and human-computer interaction and has developed an innovative AI technology for emotion recognition. This technology offers added value for many areas, especially against the background of demographic change and the shortage of skilled workers. At HAW Hamburg, Arne and Sobin were involved in the Smart Systems Research and Transfer Centre of the Faculty of Engineering and Computer Science and in the EmotionBike research project, among others. The Beyond Emotion team currently consists of 16 people (including three freelancers), four of whom are HAW alumni and four of whom are currently studying at HAW Hamburg.
