The bands "Die Ärzte" and "Die Toten Hosen" will provide a laboratory for four concerts in Berlin in August 2022 with around a quarter of a million visitors, in which products, processes and innovations that are as climate- and resource-positive as possible will be implemented, tested and checked for their scalability. The start-up traceless from the Technical University of Hamburg, which is supported by beyourpilot, will also be there.
Whether the purchase of green electricity, humus toilets or compostable T-shirts: at the four concerts (20.8., 26.8., 27.8. and 28.8.2022) at Tempelhof Airport in Berlin, an attempt was made for the first time to optimise all products and processes through C2C innovations. Where this was not possible due to a lack of technical implementation options or for cost reasons, the best possible ecological alternatives were implemented. All measures are explained through an information concept about Cradle to Cradle, circularity and sustainability for visitors, politicians and the event industry on site and digitally.
The Tempelhof Laboratory was initiated by Cradle to Cradle NGO, Loft Concerts GmbH, KKT GmbH – Kikis Kleiner Tourneeservice and Side by Side Eventsupport GmbH. The implementation is taking place together with numerous partners from the field. Also involved: the start-up traceless of the Hamburg University of Technology.
Cradle to Cradle (C2C) solutions for a constructive circular economy
“Cradle to Cradle” (C2C) is an approach for a continuous and consistent circular economy. The principle, which can also be perceived as a philosophy or system, was designed at the end of the 1990s by the German chemist Michael Braungart and the US architect William McDonough.
The aim is to show how C2C solutions that already exist today can lead to a circular economy that offers economic, ecological and social added value for society as a whole – and how, derived from this, large-scale events with positive effects for people and the environment can also become standard.
Traceless founder Dr Anne Lamp has been active in the Cradle to Cradle NGO for about seven years, including as founder and leader of the Hamburg regional group. “During my doctorate, I based my research on the biological cycle and started the search for alternative materials,” the now doctoral researcher told us in an interview two years ago. She is also involved in the NGO’s educational work as a C2C trainer. These voluntary activities are a matter of honour for Anne.
Publication of research results in November 2022
The results of the C2C measures of the mentioned concerts will be published transparently as a multilingual digital guidebook in November 2022. The impact measurement for this was carried out in cooperation with the Boston Consulting Group in order to make the effects visible and scalable in the form of saved CO₂ emissions, lower waste generation through recyclability, positive social impacts or higher material health. The guidebook is being written in cooperation with the policy consultancy adelphi. This will create a blueprint that organisers worldwide can use to continue the pioneering work of the Tempelhof Laboratory. At the same time, it identifies innovation potential at the product and process level as well as missing framework conditions that impede or prevent scaling. These findings were bundled in a report with recommendations for business and politics.
The other project components of Labor Tempelhof include a transformation platform, through which networks can be established and experiences and ideas exchanged in order to advance the overall societal transformation towards circular economy and action, as well as a C2C exhibition with a series of events until 2024 in Berlin.
Labor Tempelhof is more than four concerts. The project shows how circular and sustainable innovations available on the market can be applied in the event context, but also in urban development and all industrial and commercial sectors. The initiators will not save the world with four concerts. But they are moving from talk to action and creating a beacon that can serve as a model – for the event industry and far beyond.
