base.camp – creative lab at the computer science center

The base.camp is a creative laboratory for computer science at the University of Hamburg. It serves as an interdisciplinary platform for applied research in the core topics of Big Data, Artificial Intelligence (AI) and SEcurity (BASE). With this focus, the lab aims to support digitalization.

The interdisciplinary lab is open to student initiatives that want to try out innovative concepts. It offers space to develop your own ideas, which are iteratively implemented and improved as prototypes. The close supervision in the lab in collaboration with the computer scientists results in solutions for real problems.

The heart of the base.camp is the lab room! Here, 6 state-of-the-art computers are available for the project participants to carry out experiments and create prototypes quickly and effectively. As a creative space, the lab room offers plenty of room for the project teams to realize and try out their own ideas and concepts. In addition to the technical hardware, we also offer equipment (tablets, RasPis, whiteboards, tables, chairs) and materials (post-its, pens, scissors, glue, Lego…) to facilitate experimentation and prototyping. In addition, modern computing servers (CPU/GPU) are available for projects as well as virtual machines on which the prototypes run.

The prototypes of the project groups are also presented at regular intervals. Our various events such as LabTalk, our base.camp lecture series, workshops and hackathons offer an opportunity to network and get to know new subject areas better.

The lab is open to any form of student initiative related to the base.camp topics and also with an interdisciplinary connection to other research fields, departments and faculties at Universität Hamburg and beyond. Everyone’s ideas are welcome. Unfortunately, space at base.camp is limited. Therefore, we have to limit access and select projects if there is high demand. Project Office Applied Social Research

The Project Office for Applied Social Research stands for independent, university-based research and supports your project – from the initial idea to the completion of the project and at moderate prices. We see ourselves as an interface between science and society and as a mediator between teaching and practice. Through cooperative projects, partners from society, politics and business work together with independent researchers and students to tackle real and relevant issues – coordinated, organized and professionally supported by the project office at the Department of Social Sciences at the University of Hamburg.

The project office not only offers its support for teaching-related projects, but also takes on external research projects for a fee.

Our scientific areas of expertise:

Project management – conception, implementation and evaluation of projects
Team composition – from a pool of scientists with different specializations and interested students
Infrastructure and materials for research
Conception and implementation of empirical studies, e.g. surveys (written, oral, telephone, online) as well as expert interviews or focus group discussions
Conducting social, political and media analyses
Data collection and evaluation, e.g. statistical analyses
Preparation of already collected data
Project and program evaluations
Preparation of topic dossiers, research reports, brochures, etc.
